A general mechanism for inhibiting corrosion involves the formation of a covering layer, usually a passive layer, that prevents the penetration of corrosives into the metal. Instead, corrosion inhibitors are <i>additives<\/i> added to the liquid surrounding the metal or object that needs protection.<\/p>\n<p>Corrosion inhibitors are common in industry and are also found in commercially available products, often in spray form combined with lubricants and sometimes penetrating oils.<\/p>\n<p>The nature of the corrosion inhibitor depends on the material being protected, usually a metallic object, and on the corrosive agent(s) being neutralized. Corrosive substances are generally oxygen, hydrogen sulfide, and <a class=\"mw-redirect\" title=\"Cacbon dioxide\" href=\"https:\/\/vi.wikipedia.org\/wiki\/Cacbon_dioxide\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener\">carbon dioxide<\/a>. Regular oxygen is removed by mitosis inhibitors such as <a title=\"Amines\" href=\"https:\/\/vi.wikipedia.org\/wiki\/Amin\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener\">amines<\/a> and <a title=\"Hydrazine\" href=\"https:\/\/vi.wikipedia.org\/wiki\/Hydrazin\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener\">hydrazine<\/a>: O<sub>2<\/sub> + N<sub>2<\/sub>H<sub>4<\/sub> \u2192 2 H<sub>2<\/sub>O + N<sub>2<\/sub><\/p>\n<p>In this example, hydrazine converts oxygen, a common corrosive substance, into water, which is generally benign. The inhibitors involved in oxygen corrosion are hexamine, phenylenediamine, and dimethylethanolamine, and their derivatives. <a class=\"mw-redirect\" title=\"Antioxidants\" href=\"https:\/\/vi.wikipedia.org\/wiki\/Ch%E1%BA%A5t_ch%E1%BB%91ng_oxy_h%C3%B3a\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener\">Antioxidants such<\/a> as sulfides and <a title=\"Vitamin C\" href=\"https:\/\/vi.wikipedia.org\/wiki\/Vitamin_C\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener\">ascorbic acid<\/a> are also used. Some corrosion inhibitors form a passive coating on the surface by chemical absorption. Benzotriazole is one of the species used to protect <a title=\"Copper\" href=\"https:\/\/vi.wikipedia.org\/wiki\/%C4%90%E1%BB%93ng\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener\">copper<\/a>.
